If we see cavities forming during your routine checkups we can clean your teeth and apply a fluoride varnish or fissure sealant to help prevent the expansion of these cavities. Fluoride varnishes and fissure sealants are common treatments for children.
If the cavities are larger or we see signs of tooth decay we can place amalgam or white fillings to prevent further deterioration and tooth loss.
A fluoride varnish is a routine treatment for children to help protect their teeth from decay. A fluoride varnish is a layer of highly concentrated fluoride applied directly to the surface of your teeth.
A fissure sealant is a resin based sealant that is applied to the biting surface of a tooth to help prevent tooth decay. It is a common treatment for children who are at risk from tooth decay once their adult molar teeth have come through.
An amalgam filling is a metal alloy used to fill cavities caused by tooth decay. Amalgam fillings are lower in cost than white fillings. They are easy to apply, strong and durable.
White fillings are similar in function to amalgam fillings, but they are made from a modern white composite material that is harder than amalgam and blends in with the colour of your tooth. They are preferred by those who are concerned about toxicity from amalgam fillings or prefer fillings that match the colour of their teeth.
Will it hurt?
There is no pain or discomfort in applying a fluoride varnish, fissure sealant or filling. If the cavity is large we may use Local Anaesthetic to make the treatment more comfortable for you.
How long do they last?
A fluoride varnish usually lasts a matter of hours. A fissure sealant can last for five years or longer and an amalgam or white filling can last for over 20 years.
Will a white filling match the colour of my teeth?
Yes. The composite material comes in a range of shades, so we can certainly match the colour of your tooth. If you are thinking about teeth whitening it would be advisable to carry this out first.
What are the costs?
